Overview

Is a new year really a new year without a lantern festival to mark the occasion? Wellington's very own Lantern Festival is back for 2019, so get ready for a weekend of delicious street food, international performances and stunning arts and craft.

Run by the people who bring you the Wellington Night Market every week, this year's festival promises to be even bigger and better than before. Once again the lanterns are set to steal the show — you'll be treated to a revamped lineup of beautiful handmade pieces, including a life-sized dragon, kiwi, peacock and panda, with five additional new lanterns. You'll also get a taster of brilliant local talent as schools around Wellington will be showcasing their own masterpieces.

Make sure you tear your gaze away from the lanterns every now and then though, as there's so much more on offer. Take a moment to appreciate cultural performances never before seen in Wellington, featuring more than 150 artists and innovative new acts jetting in all the way from Taiwan.

There will be games, competitions and activities to partake in, and of course, more than 70 of your favourite Wellington food stalls will be on hand to keep you well fed.

Don't miss this opportunity to ring in the Chinese New Year, Wellington style.
