Overview
Musicals, love stories and happy endings are all very well, but there are certain times in life when one simply needs a healthy dose of blood and gore.
Presented by Fresh Dada, Shakespeare’s bloodiest and most violent play Titus Andronicus is adapted to be set in the 1950’s amongst the hustle and bustle of the corporate world. If you’ve never heard of the store before – I’ll proceed to judge you (harshly) for your lack of Shakespeare know-how, and then give you a rundown of the plot, but only so you don’t look like a complete illiterate peasant in front of your hot date (you can thank me later).
So the CEO of a big-deal company dies and his two sons are vying for the right to succeed, but the people are calling for Titus Andronicus (yes, that’s a real name) – our beloved heroine of strong, ambitious character to take the corporate throne. Cue Titus’ internal conflict and some terribly callous Shakespearean words from the two lousy sons (which aren’t actually very callous at all). There’s also a woman named Tamora – the head of a rival company – and her ‘exotic Moorish lover’ and her two kids. Not to give too much away, but basically something crap happens to Tamora and she becomes bent on taking an eye for an eye, and then everyone else just wants revenge and justice and sex and its just this terribly artistic sin-fest that really makes you contemplate our modern predicament of paralysing self-interest.
Performed in the gorgeous loft space of Willis York, grab your tickets to Fresh Dada’s first non-musical, pronto. As a side note, the show is said to contain strong depictions of violence, sexy time and scenes that may disturb, so probably not one to bring your little sister too, eh?
