Guerrilla Gardening

Overview

A new movement is sprouting in Auckland; it's clean, green and possibly even good to eat. Guerrilla gardening is coming to a street near you and here to tell you all about it is Richard Reynolds, founder of Guerrilla Gardening UK.

As part of the edible gardens project, Reynolds will be sharing his knowledge and expertise in a presentation at the Biz Dojo Co-Space. The talk will cover the history of the movement, guerrilla gardening in a Pacific context, other projects such as Pimp Your Pavement and thoughts on where the movement is heading.

Started in New York in the 70s by a group called Green Guerillas, guerrilla gardening has since grown into an international movement. For the past 10 years Reynolds has been involved with beautifying streets and creating guerrilla gardens around the world; in Beirut, Prague, Moscow and Africa. He's even writing a book on the subject.

Over the past nine months People In You Neighbourhood (PIYN) has been working in conjunction with Auckland City Council to create edible gardens around the city. The project aims to raise awareness of sustainability and permaculture practices and  the ability to grow food in an urban environment.

With the price of fresh fruit and veg going through the roof, guerrilla gardening is the perfect passive protest. Fresh greens and fresh ideas, it's got to be a winning combination.
