Famously billed as the race that stops a nation, The Melbourne Cup is not only one of the biggest days on the Australian calendar, but also one that us Kiwis are happy to jump on the back of in order to take score a cheeky day off work. Held every year since 1861 on the first Tuesday of November, the Melbourne Cup is a spectacle of truly competitive, exciting and glamorous proportions, darling.

Talk to the chaps and it's all about the bets, but talk to the ladies and it's more of a 'oh my word, what the devil to wear!'

Fashion on the Field is inseparable to the Cup itself and has become a major focus of the day. The elegant hats and ridiculous fascinators that are made for the event almost single-handedly keep Melbourne milliners in business; think royal wedding guests times several hundred. Depsite looking slightly Dr Seuss-esque en masse, The Melbourne Cup is one of few opportunities to really go to town on dressing up.

In all of Auckland, there aren't too many more suitable places to enjoy the fun of the races than the leafy green Britomart Country Club. This year the grassy bar is playing host to a live stream of the Melbourne Cup. It will be the place to be to get amongst the action, fashion and a steady flow of bubbly for the afternoon.

Tickets include a Mumm Beverage package, as well as the famously tasty BCC canapes provided throughout the afternoon. All races from Melbourne Cup Day will be shown live on two HD screens. Prizes for the best dressed will of course be a feature as well as Tote betting available on site. Game responsibly etc etc.

So whoever it is that you need to weasel up to in order to skip your 9-5 duties next Tuesday, make sure you get on to it. An afternoon at the country club with friends, frocks and bubbly-induced bets is always a sure win for a fun filled afternoon.
