Overview
While traditions aren't replicated in every corner of the world, the classic Sunday roast is one we agree is worth holding onto. If you're traditional in any sense of the word, or are looking for a way to warm your belly, Auckland has a number of spots keeping the age-old ritual alive.
OSTRO, BRITOMART
First up is Ostro, a modern brasserie with Masterchef judge Josh Emett at its helm. Situated on Auckland's waterfront, the panoramic views are the perfect complement to a spectacular menu. We're talking pork belly, seared duck breast, lobster and more. Due to popularity, the Beef Wellington must be ordered 48 hours in advance, not kidding. Once you've worked your way through a main (or two) wash it all down with something from the desert menu: the brandy snaps, crème brûlée and affogato are all worthy.
JERVOIS STEAK HOUSE, HERNE BAY
As the name suggests, Jervois Steak House is a strong advocate for all things meat. The menu boasts every cut imaginable (think: signature rib eye, rump steak, sirloin on the bone and scotch fillet), but we're here for the Sunday roast. This popular dinner for two (that's $39 per person) includes Wakanui rump, duck fat roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables and sensational Yorkshire pudding. Better still, if you'd rather indulge from the comfort of your sofa, there's always the option of book online and takeaway. Too easy.
BIRD ON A WIRE, VARIOUS LOCATIONS
If you're after a freshly roasted chook, Bird on a Wire ticks that box (and several others). Their free-range, rotisserie chicken can be ordered by the quarter and all the way through to a whole chook, which serves three to four humans. The 'others' we mentioned include everything from sides like beer battered chips and seasonal vegetables, to the Korean fried chicken burger and lemongrass chicken baguette. Plus, with three locations to choose from (and Uber Eats), there's a good chance your dream Sunday roast isn't too far off.
THE GRILL BY SEAN CONNOLLY, AUCKLAND CBD
With a modern twist on traditional, The Grill by Sean Connolly offers fresh, authentic and simply out-of-this-world flavours — think mum's signature meat and potatoes, but a little classier (sorry mums). The Sunday roast special is $40 per head and includes slow roast rib, béarnaise sauce, red wine jus and Yorkshire pudding (like Ostro, we'd recommend booking early). As well as offering a menu that will most certainly make you salivate, the service is also top notch. Expect friendly faces and impeccable attention to detail.
SIOSTRA, GREY LYNN
If you can't make it on a Sunday, fear not — Siostra's soul food has your Sunday roast cravings covered from Tuesday through to Saturday. Tucked away in Grey Lynn, its cosy atmosphere and eclectic décor gives it that home away from home vibe. In terms of the menu, it's the perfect marriage between modern and traditional. Small bites like the marinated olives, fried tapioca and grilled flat bread are perfect entrées to their main helpings, which range from scotch fillet to braised ox cheek and everything in between.
