Overview
Gone are the days trying to hunt down Mexican food truck Taco Loco; owners Roger Moraes and Marcelo Bianchess have packed up their hand-painted caravan and settled down in the heart of Mount Albert. The tasty little cantina is located in the old Sprout café site where the local market is held every Friday and Saturday. Taco Loco was well-known on the food truck circuit, but you needn't worry, it will still be dishing out delicious street food once a week — you can keep tabs on the truck via the Taco Loco Facebook page.
The permanent Taco Loco space is bright, vibrant and certainly inviting; it comes decked-out with mismatched tables and chairs, brightly-coloured decorations, and who could forget the bold artwork of the skeleton bride and groom. Although relocated from the sidewalk, Roger and Marcelo have still managed to give a 'street' feel to the space, giving off a Mexican street party vibe.
Now, it's what you've all been waiting for…the food. The aim of the menu is to showcase traditional Mexican breakfast foods, such as huevos rancheros ($17.50) and molletes ($11). The former comes with two fried eggs, tortillas and beans, while latter is the Mexican equivalent of beans on toast made up of refried beans and topped with melted cheese and pico de gallo salsa.
The quesadillas are next level and can be enhanced with the filling of your choice — chicken, beef or chilli con carne with a dollop of guac. If none of these flavoursome dishes take your fancy then the menu also offers typical brunch options like muesli and yoghurt, eggs benedict and eggs on toast, with a tortilla option of course.
If you're an early riser and need your coffee fix, then Taco Loco is open at 6.30am to deliver Coffee Lab brews in hand. If coffee's not your thing there are some fresh pressed juices and warming teas on offer.
With plans to become an outdoor bar in the summer, this unique eatery is perfect for all seasons. It will warm you up in the winter with fiery chilli con carne and quench your thirst in the warmer months with refreshing margaritas. Currently open until 3pm, seven days a week, there is plenty of time for you to treat your tastebuds to a Mexican fiesta.
