Sometimes it happens that we are lucky enough to find a little piece of New York City in a place that is a little closer to home and doesn't require a hefty airfare. Situated in Brisbane's Burnett Lane, Super Whatnot is an inner city haunt perfect for those looking for something akin to a Manhattan speakeasy.

This hole-in-the-wall bar can claim the title of "the city's first serious laneway bar". But, the question is, does it live up to such a title? We vote yes!

Upon entry, it is almost shocking how tiny the bar is. We know laneway bars are small, but this bar is the very definition of intimate. The bar has a capacity of 60, meaning sometimes you may have to stand. But that's no problem, it even adds to the charm of Super Whatnot. It is housed in an abandoned beauty college, and works on a split-level design, with the bar conveniently located on the middle floor. The interiors are as dark and shady as a laneway bar should be, and the beats are programmed from the bar staff's iPods, giving the bar a very homely and unpretentious feel.

Now the important stuff: the drinks. The bar has a rotating selection of boutique beers and wines, meaning there is always something new to try. The cocktail list may be small, but it is well balanced and has been carefully selected, comprising of both original and classic concoctions. Be sure to try the 'Walking Dead', normally a Scandinavian classic, but one that has been perfectly and expertly replicated. The bar staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready with a drink recommendation.

Much like the atmosphere of the bar, the menu is equally North American inspired. Cornbread, fried chicken and the well named "Po' boy sandwich" are some of the tasty pickings.

Stroll through Burnett Lane and pop in to Super Whatnot – we promise you won't regret it. Our hint: get there early, pinch a seat and settle in for a great night.
