Overview

First, Lune Croissanterie arrived in Brisbane, setting up a local pastry haven. Then, it brought its croissant degustations to town, because who doesn't want to eat multiple different types of buttery pastries in one sitting? Now, it's teaming up with the Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery on a special croissant for the two galleries' 10th Asia Pacific Triennial — and the result looks like it could be on display itself.

This eye-catching, tastebud-tempting dish is called The Rose Lychee, and it does indeed feature both rosewater and the sweet-tasting fruit. Stuffed inside, you'll find rosewater syrup, coconut frangipane, vanilla cream, Japanese cheesecake and lychee jelly, while it's also decked out on top with fresh lychee, lychee jelly, candied rose petals and white chocolate shards.

In its daily operations, Lune already goes the extra mile with its croissants. The flaky pastries have been called "the finest you will find anywhere in the world" by The New York Times, and benefit from founder Kate Reid's background as an ex-Formula 1 aerodynamicist — so they're made and baked in a climate-controlled glass cube, and perfected using a time-consuming process. But The Rose Lychee clearly takes things up a few notches, with Lune Brisbane's Head Chef Mitch Suchowacki fittingly taking inspiration from the creativity and flavours of the Asia-Pacific region.

"APT10 is a contemporary exhibition that celebrates the art and culture of our neighbouring nations and islands," said Suchowacki.

"From the Japanese cheesecake to the Tahitian vanilla cream, The Rose Lychee is our own unique contribution. A celebration of the tastes and produce that we are fortunate enough to have access to from across the Asia and the Pacific, brought to life in a beautiful pastry."

To nab one, you'll need to head to either the QAG Cafe and GOMA Bistro from Saturday, December 4 through till the end of January. Getting in early each day is recommended — while they're on the menu daily, only a limited number will be made every day.
