Belém Tower

Overview

Gateway, lighthouse, prison, tower of defence. Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) has survived and transformed over its 500 years of use. This elaborate beacon of white beside the shining waters of the Tagus River was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Take a tour of this historic tower, built in the 16th century Manuelino style by Francisco de Arruda, and see the prison pits, cannon windows, gargoyles and roof terrace, noting the Moorish influences typical of the time.

You can still see evidence of the 1840s restoration under King Ferdinand II and its accompanying decorative stone features. More than just historically significant, it's also architectural beauty and one of the most visited sites in Lisbon.

Then, visit the nearby Jeronimos Monastery, which was strategically defended via the Belém Tower ramparts.
