Colourful Mexican food and salty air — travel to Central America without getting on a plane at this Cronulla mainstay. El Sol Tortillaria Mexican Restaurant opened in 1997 and has remained popular with locals for decades.

Here, the food leans towards Tex-Mex and the tacos are the standouts. Stuffed with fillings including tequila-battered cauliflower, beer-battered Baja fish with pico chipotle mayo, ancho spice-rubbed pork, chorizo with smokey chilli and more. Or, if you're feeling a little more adventurous, try to Mexican hot dog, which comprises chorizo, chimichurri, cheese, guac, jalapeño and chipotle mayo on a soft roll.

Head there between 5pm and 6pm to make the most of El Sol's $10 margaritas during happy hour. And, if you're there on a Thursday, load up on $10 plates of nachos. Plus, if live music is your thing, keep an eye on El Sol's socials for updates on its sporadic gig lineup.
