Overview

There are so many things right about Susie Q Coffee & Records. For starters, you can pop in for a short black and leave with a Black Sabbath. Yes, that's right, we're talking about the good stuff: an espresso bar come record store.  Lolling around on Hutchinson Street, this place is a rocking-right fit for breakfasting locals strolling the Hills' traps from the night before.

The coffee ($3.50) alone is worth getting all groupie about. Suzie Q are the only Sydney supplier serving Duke's, the cult Melbourne coffee bean body, and it has the perfect hangover-banishing balance of bolstering strength and dreamy deliciousness.

The food is friendly, not flashy, with a focus of freshness and uncomplicated flavour. For a courageous start to the morning after the night before, you can't go past the Eggs and Sausage in a Cadillac with Susan Mitchelson ($15), an arepa roll with fried egg, melted cheese, chorizo and salsa. Je Regrette Everything ($14) is a roadie-approved brioche bun, crammed full of pulled pork, spiced cabbage salad and roasted garlic and dill aioli. Then there is the daily special for $20. This time round it was a ridic pork terrine sandwich filled with tasty mustardy leaves.

The best part? Like any self-respecting rockstar, Suzie Q provides booze. The selection is pleasing, although petite, with a considered list of local and international beers and wines. The cheese plate, Sex and Figs ($15 for one cheese or $28 for two cheeses) is served with tomato jam, fresh fruit, Turkish figs and sourdough. A complete treat.

And as you would expect, Suzie Q is serious about the tunes. They have an excellent selection of preloved records for sale as well as an open-to-suggestion playlist for in-house spinning. Check out this place's Slow Cooked on Sundays session, for chilled tracks from DJs who take to the decks.

So for a stellar line up of coffee, retro tracks and a crowd to match, Suzie Q Coffee & Records is the ticket. Get in quick too, because word's getting out fast.
