Overview
If there is one thing that design school taught me, (and I'm not actually sure if it was uni itself, or just that flicking through magazines was great procrastination) it was the enjoyment in finding a really solid design magazine. A self-appointed expert on mag content, layout, imagery, typography and stock, I feel qualified to say that when PILOT magazine hit the printers early last year it aced all the said categories and has become a serious favourite on the shelves. Probably more importantly, PILOT's been getting the nod from the industry here and overseas. Issue #5 received a silver pin at the recent Best Awards and Issue #4 was shortlisted in the D&AD Awards in London.
PILOT is a well-executed collection of design, fashion, architecture, romance, magic and mystery – a mix that editor Andy Pickering believes is essential to push the mag beyond a simple genre and towards a finely crafted hybrid product. The publication works simultaneously as a gallery space, collectable archive and manifesto. It's not hard to spot passion in this field and Pickering not only oozes it, but it's clear he has an eye for beauty and remains committed to working with a purpose.
The third event in the Creative Mornings series has Pickering speaking about the challenges he has faced as the driver behind what appears to be an increasingly ambitious project, and how he has managed to achieve such success in the cut-throat world of publishing.
Creative Mornings are free but you need to register to secure your seat and coffee. The first two have been so popular that the CM crew have opened this session up to 100 people. Having been to the other Creative Mornings, I can definitely say they're worth the early start on Friday.
