Overview

Hunting for a new go-to spot to indulge in a long lunch with family, a place for a laid-back first date, or to catch up with the gals over a prosecco? Launch headfirst into modern Italy with a visit to Elmos on Ponsonby Road. This enchanting pizza, burrata and spritz bar is the new kid on Ponsonby's block and has opened its doors just in time for summer.

Jessica and Bronwyn Payne are the masterminds behind Hoppers Garden Bar (ex Golden Dawn). The talented duo are extending their reach into the Auckland foodie scene. Elmos is the latest addition to the Payne sisters growing cavalry.

With a focus on local ingredients, Elmos has produced an extensive and drool-worthy menu. Starting with the drinks. We recommend the Cocchi Rosa spritz ($16) an aromatic aperitif, and the Who Shot The President rum cocktail ($18). These fresh and fun tipples are definitely gram-worthy and are the perfect lead up to the Italian pizza scene.

Elmos covers all bases with a selection of traditional wood-fired pizza, such as the classic Mama-gherita ($22). As well as some more exotic options like, Tikka Chance On Me ($26) and Truffle Shuffle ($28). Our pick was the four-cheese Discovery Of Honey ($26) complete with crispy sage and roasted almonds.

While on the topic of truffle, the Don't Truffle With Me burrata ($21) is heavenly, and should definitely be truffled with. Not familiar with burrata? It is a soft cheese with a buttery stracciatella and cream centre, and a slightly thicker mozzarella casing. This particular dish has a truffle cream middle and is presented on a bed of mushroom and pancetta ragu.

To balance out the savoury, give the XL hazelnut chocolate dessert calzone ($14) a go. When they say XL, they mean XL. This calzone (a sort of folded pizza pocket), is the size of a watermelon. Stuffed with hazelnut, orange zest, Nutella, ricotta and mascarpone (because we're still working through the many many varieties of cheese on the menu). This one is definitely best shared. If you are after something a little lighter, try Elmos' Limoncello pie ($12). Your classic lemon meringue pie, but better.

The décor has a touch of Italian romance and the lighting will lull you into a stupor once you have a belly full of carbs. The staff are busy yet efficient and the food comes out relatively quickly. Elmos seats around 100 and takes bookings for groups of eight or more. Come with a big appetite, or with a group so you can try a selection of things from the menu. We suggest spending a Saturday afternoon working your way through their spritz and cocktail menu. Carry on into the night and make the most of the Ponsonby vibes with their live music and cosy atmosphere.
