Overview

Stepping into the buzzing Winn Lane precinct is like dying and going to kitsch heaven. What would seem like an ordinary street from afar is in fact surrounded by vintage boutiques and cute little book nooks.

At the centre of all this attention stands Flamingo Cafe, complete with the sounds of Madonna’s 'Get into the groove', corn cob stools and Astroturf terrace. Don’t get jealous, we know you want one too.

The décor is enough to make you want to stay and wonder at the history of each piece on show, and the atmosphere makes it very easy to spend a few hours leisurely soaking in all the nostalgia. Immaculately dressed staff tend to your every need and make you feel welcome.

Flamingo’s old school approach to food is simple, made evident by the giant homemade sausage rolls and chocolate crackles sitting on the café’s window sills. Our waitress, beautifully dressed in head-to-toe polka dots, recommends Flamingo’s breakfast standout – the mushroom and brie fontina toastie, the ultimate treat for our vegetarian friends.

Meat lovers can rejoice in the ham steak, avocado and labne on multigrain, another Flamingo favourite. Although the portions are quite large, the flavours do not disappoint. Mushrooms are grilled to perfection and dishes are well seasoned with fresh herbs. The Genovese coffee arrived quickly in a perfect size cup, not too big so as to spoil your appetite and not too small so as to keep you from beating your forehead against the table regretting the previous night’s activities.

Much like the bird itself, Flamingo is a vibrant, social and lovable cafe, and a must visit for any lovers of retro and wholesome food.
