Overview

It's been a busy 12 months or so for the folks at Montrachet, one of Brisbane's favourite French fine diners. Under the ownership of Shannon and Clare Kellam, the restaurant moved across town to Bowen Hills' King Street, then opened its own boulangerie — and now it's given the latter a makeover.

King Street Bakery is the end result, with the multi-purpose spot open from Monday to Friday for both breakfast and lunch, and on Saturdays for a long, lazy brekkie. You can drop by to pick up freshly made brioche, baguettes, pastries, and sweet and savoury tarts to take home with you, or enjoy them in-store with a coffee. Or, you can settle in for a meal, with chefs Tara Bain and Jamie Pearce whipping up a small but significant menu.

Early morning options include Granny Smith apple and caramel baked with brioche, rainbow trout fillet with poached eggs and marinated feta, and sautéed mushrooms with aged sheep's milk cheese and tarragon — plus takes on good ol' bacon and eggs, avocado on sourdough, and eggs benedict. Unsurprisingly, bread features heavily among the range of breakfast dishes.

For lunch, diners can choose from seven options, including a seared black Angus onglet with French fries and French salad, and a Dutch cream potatoes with creme fraiche, gremolata, salmon roe and chives. With the bakery licensed, customers can also wash it all down with one of 14 wines or three beers.
