Overview
Winner of Concrete Playground's Best New Cafe of 2015.
If you feel good after eating at Gratia, it might not just be your stomach talking. Although the food is pretty delicious — hello, brisket and black rice flatbread — chances are your head, heart and conscience will feel pretty good too. That's because the cafe (and its adjoining dinner-only restaurant, Folonomo) is 100 per cent non-profit.
Yep, the price you pay for your coffee and eggs on toast will go a lot further than your regular breakfast money. At Gratia, all the profits go straight back into non-profit organisations — 50 per cent goes into their own organisation, The Pure Foundation, and 50 per cent into a charity of your choice. It's not your average Surry Hills cafe, but one that seems to be taking its cues from Melbourne non-profit cafes, Feast of Merit and Shebeen.
On top of all this do-goodness, it's a downright great cafe. The menu covers everything from sardines on toast to coconut sago pudding to a green brekkie bowl. They also have some downright delish cauliflower, pea and feta fritters, which pervade the norm of standard floury breakfast fritters, and taste almost like a fried Indian snack. The coffee comes from Sydney roasters, Gabriel, and the tea from T Totaler. The bright, open space and courtyard out the back is the perfect place to perch on Bourke Street.
Gratia is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday to Sunday, and Folonomo is open for dinner from 6pm.
