Overview

Keeping in the European theme of the Three Lamps end of Ponsonby Road, Gusto Italiano resides right next to La Cantine du Torchon. Bathed in full sunshine in the evening, I would definitely recommend coming here for a pre dinner drink and nibble.

My first excitement was seeing Menabrea beer on the menu, my favourite Italian beer and permanent resident in our fridge in Italy. Moretti was also on offer -nice for there to be more than Peroni on the Italian beer menu. There is also a comprehensive Italian wine list.

The second excitement was the antipasto della casa which we decided to share. It was delicious! I hate it when you get served an antipasto that you know you could have done better at home for half the price, a bit of brie and a few crackers. This one, however was full of treats. Two bruschette, one with a black olive and anchovy tapenade, another with zucchini, 4 types of cured meats, black olives marinated in lemon and herbs, a big mushroom, a beautifully warm artichoke and best of all- baked scamorza cheese with truffle pesto. All gobbled up with great delight.

The menu also features a range of pizza and pasta which are nice, but sadly are a bit of a disappointment after the starters. My advice, go with a group and treat it like a tapas restaurant - heaps of starters to share.
