In recent years, few areas have had such an intense transformation as Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Now, shopping in the west extends far beyond just Footscray Market. But, despite an influx of new developments and fancy eateries, the area retains its strong sense of community, and residents (both old and new) can enjoy the Vietnamese and Ethiopian restaurants in Footscray, the relaxed village vibes of Yarraville and the growing arts scene in Newport.
Whether you’re new to the area, have lived there your whole life or only visit occasionally, there’s always something to be uncovered. We’ve put together this guide to the western suburbs with American Express so you can shop small and support local business. Take along your American Express card and you’ll be able to treat yourself to everything from golden triangles of roti to a new pair of glasses. West is best.
Hop on a train to Williamstown, which will stop at all the main spots along the way, including Footscray, Seddon, Yarraville, Spotswood and Newport. You can switch at Footscray for a coffee and a bite to eat at Footscray Milking Station before jumping on a Sunbury line to head further out west.
With a booming community comes booming creativity, and you can’t miss tasting a beer at the woman-led Two Birds Brewing in Spotwood, catching a show at Newport’s The Substation (a not-for-profit multi-arts centre in a 100-year-old repurposed industrial building) and hunting for the perfect gift at monthly makers market Footscray Finds.
Stroll down Barkly and Hopkins streets in Footscray, Gamon Street in Seddon and Nelson Place in Williamstown. The hero of Yarraville is Ballarat Street, where the old art deco-style Sun Theatre still screens cult classic and new releases, while the street itself has been transformed into a meeting place with trees, shops and cafes.
Somewhat forgotten in favour of neighbours across the bay, the western suburbs also enjoy life on the water from the riverside parkland beside Footscray Community Arts Centre, or from Melbourne’s first port, Williamstown, which was established back in 1837.
